Salon Success Academy Teams up for Relay for Life

Salon Success Academy is participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life fundraiser at Guasti Regional Park in Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday, June 7th.Hoping to top its fundraising efforts from last year’s event, the Cut Out Cancer With Salon Success Academy team chose a fun theme of movies and television from the 1950’s and 60’s. They are still accepting team members and donations for the 24-hour event.

“This is an extraordinary event and we are proud to have such an active role in it,” said Salon Success Academy owner Robert Gross. “I can’t think of a more worthy cause.”

Salon Success Academy traces its participation, in the nationally sponsored walkathon, to the work of Susan Turner who was a part of the school’s family for nearly three decades before her untimely death in 2012. Susan succumbed to the disease she helped fight. Now her family continues the effort in her honor.

“Everybody knows somebody who has been touched by cancer,” said Susan’s sister, April Belcher. April and Susan’s other sister, Christina Belcher both work in the corporate offices of Salon Success Academy and also work hard to carry on their sister’s legacy. Their team, dubbed “I Love Susie,” is based on the iconic 50’s show I Love Lucy.

“My parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews are all part of our team,” said April. “We’re doing this in honor of Susie, but also to honor all those affected by cancer.”

The school has a team page on the Relay for Life website, noting that they are trying “to make a difference in the fight against this disease.” They are accepting donations through the page and have been conducting fundraisers at their five locations throughout Inland Empire, California. They have been selling beauty products, running bake sales, and using other fundraisers to boost their final donation totals. On the day of the event, they will conduct raffles and contests. In addition to having a team participate, Salon Success Academy will also provide salon services to participants. Students will offer massages, manicures, esthetic services and product sales.

“We’re even going to provide fill-in walkers for participants while they get their salon service done,” said April.

The day begins with an opening ceremony, immediately followed by a “survivor’s lap,” where cancer survivors begin the walking event by taking the first lap around the track. Participants camp out overnight and take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Relay for Life closes 24 hours after its kickoff when the final ceremony honors those who have lost their lives to cancer.

Salon Success Academy urges those who have been touched by cancer to “please join our team or make a donation, because saving lives starts one team, one participant, one dollar at a time.”
