Director Brings Advanced Training & New Passion to Esthetics Program
Nick Alaniz, the Director of Esthetics at Salon Success Academy, is taking the esthetics program to the next level at the beauty school. In November, he organized an esthetics symposium for students, which took months of preparation. The event brought together esthetician students from each campus with a group of guest educators for a day filled of advanced training and demonstrations. It was all part of Mr. Alaniz’s goal to bring more advanced education to the esthetician students of Salon Success Academy and give them new passion for working in the beauty industry.
Mr. Alaniz has been a professional in the beauty industry for over 30 years. He worked as a licensed esthetician and professional makeup artist in Beverly Hills for years, before becoming an educator for Bioelements, a popular skin care line. He continues to be an educator for Bioelements and also works in a nearby medical office preforming chemical peels a few days a week. He’s extremely busy, but Mr. Alaniz knows his additional work is beneficial to his students, who are constantly learning the latest and greatest techniques in skin care being used out in the field.
When Mr. Alaniz was hired as the Director of Esthetics seven years ago, his first task was to breathe new life into the esthetics program. This meant a new curriculum, new exams, and new student kits. He worked hard to create a customized esthetician kit that included everything students would want and everything licensed estheticians would be using out in the field. The kits now include a LightStim, an anti-aging LED light therapy system, a Galvanic Spa system, and a Clarisonic PROSonic Cleansing System, just to name a few things.
As the Director of Esthetics, Mr. Alaniz travels around to the different campuses to check in on the esthetician students and give them advanced training sessions. Recently, he brought a LightStim from the doctor’s office into the classroom, to show students how it differed from the one included in their kit. He also trained the students to perform pumpkin facials, a popular salon special at the beauty school this fall.
“I love this industry! I wouldn’t be working so many hours if I didn’t absolutely love it. That’s something I want to share with my students. I hope it inspires them,” Mr. Alaniz said.
On Saturday, November 17, Mr. Alaniz coordinated a day-long esthetics symposium at the Salon Success Academy Upland campus. Before the symposium, he polled students to find out what they wanted to learn about. He spent months coordinating the event and scheduling guest educators to come in that would please the students. Here are some of the highlights from the symposium:
- Advanced Chemical Peel class from PCA
- Brazilian waxing demonstration from Satin Smooth
- A class on the benefits of aromatherapy
- Continental breakfast for students
- Product giveaways & door prizes
Mr. Alaniz hopes to hold a symposium for esthetics students every three months and to vary the location among the different campuses. He’s also coordinating a separate Advanced Chemical Peel certification class for senior students and alumni students in February.
