Salon Success Students Raise $3,500 For American Cancer Society

May ’12

Students and staff from Salon Success Academy raised over $3500 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life on May 19 at Guasti Regional Park in Rancho Cucamonga. For the third year, the beauty school teamed up with the ‘Fight Cancer with Jeff’ relay team. Not only were the students and staff supporting Jeff’s family, they were also supporting each other in their personal struggles with cancer.

Student Ambassadors from each of the five Salon Success Academy campuses coordinated the fundraising efforts at their school. For months leading up to the day-long event, they sold baked goods, raffles tickets for beauty products, and tickets to participate in Spirit Day. One of the students’ fathers generously donated two dugout tickets to a L.A. Dodgers game in June, which they also sold raffle tickets for. The day of the event, the Ambassadors worked around the clock giving manicures, massages, and braiding hair in order to raise more money.

“We feel blessed that we’re able to support Jeff’s family every year. The Student Ambassadors worked really hard and selflessly to make this possible. I’m very proud of them!” Christina Belcher said.

Salon Success Academy first joined the ‘Fight Cancer with Jeff’ Relay For Life team three years ago. Heather Harris, a Student Ambassador from the Upland campus, asked the school to help raise money for her family’s team in support of for her cousin Jeff Millet who is battling colon cancer. Jeff even came to the school and spoke to the students so they’d understand who their fundraising efforts would be helping. The students and staff went beyond just fundraising and decided to join Jeff’s relay team!

“Salon Success Academy comes out every year to support us and they really go all out. We’re so thankful to have their support. I hope to see them for many years to come,” Jeff said.

Jeff said the Relay For Life reminds him that cancer effects everyone he knows in some way. The students and staff talked about their personal stories with cancer throughout the day. Jenny Piker, a Student Ambassador from the Fontana campus, spoke about her mother who passed away from breast cancer three years ago. She said the Relay For Life is an emotional day for her, but she finds strength and comfort by supporting Jeff’s family and the other cancer survivors.

“Relay For Life isn’t just about cancer victims who’ve passed. It’s about the survivors, the family members, and the care givers. Cancer has touched everyone in some way or another,” Jenny said.

The Relay For Life is the number one fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society. Teams of participants set up campsites and walk around the field for 24 hours. The money raised provides funding for cancer research, treatment, and services for those going through treatment. The Relay For Life also provides an opportunity for those who are going through cancer treatment to meet others battling the disease and share hope.
