Stylist Credits Her Success to Redlands Campus Director
Angela Fuentes-Angel formed close relationships with the staff and Campus Director at Salon Success Academy in Redlands while she was a cosmetology student there. She credits their guidance and support for helping her find success in the beauty industry so quickly after she graduated. After assisting one of the busiest stylists in the Inland Empire, she’s now moved on to a position as a full-time stylist at Bello Cristo Salon.
Angela was always interested in working with art and color. She thought about going to cosmetology school, but some of her close friends discouraged her from enrolling. She tried taking courses at the Art Institute and a nearby community college, but it just wasn’t right for her. She had been working in a restaurant for a few years when she decided it was time for a change.
“It was New Year’s Eve. I told myself that I’ve got to start now or I’ll be feeling like this again next year,” Angela said.
She started researching her options online and learned about Salon Success Academy. She took a tour of the school’s Redlands campus and was impressed by the facility and the staff. She came back the very next day to enroll in the cosmetology program and started classes three days later.
Angela had finally found her calling! She found that she was hungry to learn everything related to cosmetology. Her instructors were all very supportive of her; always answering her questions and giving her extra instructions. She found the Campus Director, Ms. Natalie, was especially supportive.
“She was always cheering me on and making me feel important. I have a lot of respect for her,” Angela said.
Because she was always going above and beyond in school, Angela would often be picked for special projects. She was often chosen to style staff member’s hair and makeup. Ms. Natalie also chose her to work behind the scenes as a stylist on a TV show.
“I specifically chose Angela because I knew she was a team player and that she could handle anything that was thrown her way. Styling for a TV show is fun, but it’s also very stressful. I knew she had what it takes,” Ms. Natalie said.
Angela knew she was gaining a lot of experience at Salon Success Academy that would help her new career.
“I loved working with clients in the school salon. I learned a lot about booking my own clients. The staff always had us thinking about life after graduation and building our own business,” Angela said.
Angela said passing the State Board exam after graduation was easy because she took her time in school seriously. Her sisters, who are both cosmetologists, recommended that she start working as an assistant once she got her license. They told her that working as an assistant would help build her confidence, adjust to life in the salon, and help her become a more successful stylist.
She quickly landed a job at the Rose of Sharon Salon, one of the top salons in the Inland Empire, assisting their busiest stylist, Teresa. Teresa was booked solid every day with clients every 30 minutes. Angela would assist with her clients any way she could, shampooing, applying color, blow drying, and finishing. Angela said it was extremely difficult, but she learned a lot about customer service and juggling clients.
Six months later, Angela was ready to put her new skills to work as a full-time stylist. She started renting a booth at Bello Cristo Salon in Redlands. Now she feels right at home in her new salon! The owner stresses the importance of continuing education and provides free cut and color classes every Monday.
As for the future, Angela wants to continue to focus on providing quality customer service and growing her clientele. She would also like to work as an educator for a product line and eventually start mentoring other young stylists.
