Our Very Own Robert Gross Works Toward Change Each and Every Day
In a recent issue of California Stylist, our very own Salon Success Academy President and Owner, Robert Gross, spoke about the positive change he works toward every day. Fred Jones interviewed Bob, calling him a California icon who raises the professionalism of the beauty industry. Bob advocates for public policy changes that he hopes will benefit beauty professionals across the country.
After he graduated college with a degree in business, Bob originally intended to go to law school. His father, Richard, convinced him to join the family business. Bob says that he “went from a fraternity house with 50 guys to a beauty school with 50 girls.” In just one year, he learned more about life than in the four years it took to get his business degree.
According to Bob, hairdressing is “50 percent talent and 50 percent people skills” and it takes hard work, but offers “great potential.” Bob feels that the existing regulations around beauty school education include many outdated rules that aren’t relevant to today’s student. Bob says he wants “to do the best job possible for our students” which led him to question many state laws and regulations. He feels that there should be a hairdressing-only license, one year work permits for graduates, competency education instead of clocked hours, and changes to the curriculum and testing process. He partnered with his colleagues including salon owners and other beauty school owners to successfully get two bills passed for a pre-application, reducing the wait time for the licensing exam, and allowing externship opportunities to count toward clocked hours.
In true Salon Success Academy fashion, Bob ultimately wants to help people reach their dreams. Salon Success Academy’s motto as a “people helping company” still reigns true.
Bob Gross organized the California Cosmetology Coalition before he became chairman and co-founder of the Professional Federation of California (PBFC). His leadership and passion within the beauty industry makes him a well-respected member of the community.
