Instructor Joyce Marquez Receives the 2013 Ultimate Teacher Award

Cosmetology teacher Joyce Marquez has been named an Ultimate Teacher of the Year. In an event sponsored by Supercuts and held last month at the Anaheim Marriot Hotel, Joyce was chosen as one of only three teachers who were singled out for their “exceptional and extraordinary teaching skills…warm and encouraging interaction with students and for being an outstanding role model for future professionals in the beauty industry.”

“I was so shocked and excited,” said Joyce.

Joyce had no idea that she had even been nominated, never mind that she’d actually won the coveted award. As an Ultimate Teacher, Joyce received a plaque, a gift, a free night’s stay at the event site and a free Pivot Point hair cutting class. Most importantly, she was recognized by her peers and by one particular student who thinks Ms. Joyce is the ultimate.

Cassandra Cruz was a student at the Salon Success Academy San Bernardino campus when she got to know Joyce as an inspiring teacher. Now a shift leader at Supercuts, Cassandra nominated Joyce by submitting a letter to Supercuts explaining why Joyce was so deserving. A board of judges, who are professionals in the beauty industry, spent weeks whittling down the list until they chose the three most compelling stories.

And Cassandra’s story was just that. Between school and work she was clocking 80 hours as she tried to support her family and build a new career. Ms. Joyce stepped into Cassandra’s life at the perfect time.

“From the moment I met her I was in complete awe,” Cassandra read from her letter. “She was unapologetically confident in her craft and was eager to teach. I was definitely eager to learn.”

Cassandra expressed gratitude for the cosmetology lessons she learned from Joyce, but even more for the life wisdom Joyce imparted.

“She helped me learn that I didn’t need to sacrifice my own sanity and happiness to help others out that I deserve the good things that I worked hard for,” said Cassandra.

In her closing, Cassandra thanked Joyce directly: “Thank you Ms. J. for everything you taught me. Without you I would not be where I am now and definitely wouldn’t have made it through to getting my license and starting my career.”

A teacher at Salon Success Academy for five years, Joyce said that she was honored by the award. Accompanying her to the Supercuts Super Sunday event were her son and his one-year-old daughter. Joyce said they all had a great time.

“It was all about celebrating and I celebrate with my family, so I brought my granddaughter,” said Joyce. When the little girl squealed as Joyce stepped to the podium to accept her award, “they told me — she’s the next ultimate educator,” laughed Joyce.

Corona Campus conducting “Raffle for Martha.”

Our Corona campus will be holding a fundraising raffle in honor of Salon Success Academy student Martha Cruz, who was killed in a car accident on January 3rd.

All raffle proceeds will benefit Martha’s family, including her 5-year-old daughter. Tickets for the gift baskets are one dollar each and the drawing will be on Friday, January 31st.

The prizes being raffled are:

• 1st Prize — Skin Care basket, Hair Color, Haircut, Shampoo, Blow Dry, Curling Iron, Mani/Pedi, Facial with Mask and Eyebrow Wax

• 3rd Prize — Facial with Mask, Eye Brow Wax, Haircut with Shampoo and Blow Dry, Mani/Pedi

Also being raffled are two baskets containing Wella shampoo, Wella conditioner, Wella Straight leave in cream, Wella finishing spray, 3 bottles of OPI polish, cleansing sugar glow, manicuring supplies, and $30 Salon Success Academy gift cards.
