Student Ambassadors Help Homeless Teens at Operation Safehouse
The Student Ambassadors at Salon Success Academy had been volunteering every month at Operation Safehouse, a shelter for homeless and runaway teens in Riverside, California. They knew the holidays would be a difficult time for the teens, so they wanted to do something extra special to cheer them up. They organized an entire holiday party, where they showered the troubled teens with gifts, haircuts, and manicures. But what meant more to the teens than the gifts was just knowing that someone cared about them.
The Student Ambassadors were able to raise over $3,000 for the holiday party at Operation Safehouse by organizing various fundraisers and bake sales at their campuses. They used that money to purchase school supplies, clothes, shoes, and games to give to the teens, as well as materials to make fleece blankets for them.
On Tuesday, December 18, the Student Ambassadors threw a holiday party at Operation Safehouse. Each student was assigned a teen to be their “client” for the day. Sarah Orona, the Director of the Student Ambassador Program, said the students were very attentive to their “clients,” making sure to cut and style their hair exactly the way they wanted. For many of the teens, it was their first time receiving a professional haircut or manicure, so they were very appreciative. After the students serviced their clients, they gave them their gifts, then watched movies and played board games together.
“It was mostly about the students just spending time with the teens. Just letting them know that someone cared about them,” Ms. Sarah said.
“My client was a 15 year-old girl who was very talkative. While I was cutting her hair, she told me everything. I realized that she was at Operation Safehouse for a reason. She had been through a really tough time. She just needed someone to listen. I was happy that I could be there for her,” Student Ambassador Amber Sidman said.
“These kids just needed attention and someone to talk to. It really helped brighten their day. But it was a great experience for us, too. I tend to be a little shy. This experience really helped me to open up to new people,” Student Ambassador Dustin Roy said.
