Salon Success Works with Students to Give Back to the Community
Salon Success Academies believes in giving back to the community whenever possible, and during the holiday season they went above and beyond, holding an “All About Family” event. On December 19, 2009, students, staff, and friends of the school worked together to create a special Christmas party for families from homeless shelters in the Inland Empire. Families arrived at the Upland campus unsure of what to expect, and were greeted with smiling faces, holiday decorations, and plenty of cheer!
The mothers were escorted to the salon floor, where they could choose from a variety of complimentary services. Students gave facials, cut and styled hair, touched-up makeup, and gave manicures to everyone who wanted to participate. The fathers also got haircuts, and kids joined the fun as well. The students were happy to provide this beauty services to families in need, and enjoyed chatting and working with everyone.
After their makeovers were complete, the kids and dads headed over to the Winter Wonderland area of the school. Here, Santa was waiting for them, ready to hand out gifts to everyone. After sitting on Santa’s lap, the kids opened their gifts and spent the afternoon playing with their new toys, painting and drawing with Salon Success Academy students, and having fun! They also enjoyed snacks and treats in a classroom set up “restaurant-style”, where more Salon Success students were working.
When the mothers completed their “day of beauty” and joined the rest of the family, they were taken to visit industry-famous photographer Gary Lyons. Gary took professional family portraits of all of the guests, giving everyone a beautiful memento from the special day. Each family glowed as they showed off their makeovers, and smiled for the camera.
The whole event would not have been possible without the hard work of the Salon Success Academies Student Ambassadors. These students were selected to represent the school in many ways, one of which is planning community events like this.
“Our Student Ambassadors went above and beyond my expectations,” said Susan Turner, Executive Vice President of Salon Success Academies. “They showed us leadership skills and creativity – some of the same skills will help them in their future beauty careers. They were an important part of this event.”
These students held fundraisers to earn the money that was used to buy all of the gifts for the children. They also wrapped and decorated every gift, and turned the Upland campus into a true “Winter Wonderland.” And most importantly, they were there all day during the “All About Family” event, making sure the day ran smoothly. These students are leaders on their campuses, and it showed as they came together to host this event.
