Graduate Achieves Success Thanks to an Education Unlike Any Other
August ’15
Cosmetology school had never been in Megan Miller’s plans. She had always wanted to follow in her dad’s footsteps and attend his Alma mater. She originally considered training to become a neuropsychologist, but doing hair was always her true dream.
Megan loves to experiment with hair and learn new styles from YouTube and Pinterest. Her passion for the industry really blossomed when she began doing more and more updos for special events. During her last semester in high school, Megan tried out a part-time night program at Salon Success Academy. She absolutely loved it! She enrolled in the full-time cosmetology program in July 2014. Megan said she loved the classroom structure that taught her proper cut and color techniques. The best part of all was the Sassoon training which “is a huge advantage that employers look for.”
Megan feels that the education at Salon Success caters to all types of learning styles by incorporating teaching methods like videos, live demos, worksheets, and mannequin practice. She enjoyed model days when friends and family visit the school to let students practice on someone familiar.
Attending beauty school wasn’t always easy. Megan worked part-time, even night shifts, changed clothes during her commute, and felt like she had no time to herself. She said that the staff, instructors, and classmates were always understanding and kept her motivated each and every day. She was inspired by the happy clients that she helped and all the great people she met along the way.
By the time Megan graduated in February 2015, she was “incredibly happy with her choice to attend Salon Success Academy.” She felt ready to conquer the State Board exam which she passed on her first try! Soon after, Megan started working at a high end salon as an assistant to get her feet wet and learn as much as she could from the experienced stylists. After about four months, she was ready to venture out on her own. She returned to Salon Success Academy to polish her résumé and interview skills and the staff “bent over backwards to help.”
Now, Megan is a stylist at MANE Salon in Upland, CA. She says it’s “empowering to be able to make people feel beautiful every single day.” She hopes to continue learning new things in the beauty industry. She wants to return to Salon Success Academy to join the barbering program and one day become a certified makeup artist. Her best advice to others is to “never give up.” There’s no better feeling than being able to say “I did it” on graduation day. Becoming a cosmetologist is rewarding, but it takes a lot of hard work. She says, “don’t be afraid to take chances and step out of your comfort zone.” Embrace the supportive environment at Salon Success Academy. Most of all, never stop learning!
