Corona Graduate On Her Way To Becoming New Instructor

August ’12

Hala Abuzaineh graduated from Salon Success Academy Corona campus just two years ago. Now she’s busy working behind the chair at a salon and training to be an instructor at the beauty school she graduated from. She says she loves everything about Salon Success Academy and wants to give back to the school which helped her get started in the beauty industry.

Before coming to Salon Success Academy, Hala was a social worker for ACCESS California Services, a non-profit organization that helps Muslim-American immigrants adjust to American society. She wasn’t feeling fulfilled by her job and knew it was time for a career change. After taking some makeup courses, she felt confident that a career in the beauty industry would be the right fit for her. She began researching her options online when she came across Salon Success Academy. She came in to the Corona campus for a tour, liked what she saw, and enrolled immediately in the cosmetology program!

Hala said she was inspired by the teachers at Salon Success Academy and their passion for the beauty industry, especially the late Ms. Susan Turner. She said the instructors were incredibly helpful to the students and always going above and beyond. Another thing that drew her to the school was the Student Ambassador Program. She knew it was a great opportunity to gain leadership skills and get involved doing charity work. Once Hala became a Student Ambassador, she began mentoring the other students who spoke English as a second language.

“If the instructor was talking, I would help translate. If there was a test coming up, or they had a client on the floor they were struggling with, I would help them. It was a good start to my teaching career,” Hala said.

Hala graduated from Salon Success Academy in July 2010. She took her State Board exam one week later and passed with flying colors. Once she obtained her license, she started renting a chair at Radiance Salon in Corona where she was able to build her clientele base in just a few months. She also was working part time at Big W Barbershop where she became more skilled at doing men’s cuts. Six months later, Hala stopped by her old beauty school to ask if there were any instructor openings.

“I love that school and I love the way they teach. I always knew that I wanted to be a part of it. Ms. Susan gave me a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she said.

Hala has found her true calling as a cosmetology instructor. She loves going beyond the basics with her students and preparing them as much as possible for life after graduation. As for her future plans, she’ll complete her teacher training in about one year. Hala said she’s looking forward to advancing her career with the beauty school that she loves and continuing the tradition of making Salon Success Academy a “people helping company.”
