Students Sweep Barristar Hair Show Competition
April ’13
Teams from the Salon Success Academy Fontana campus swept the Barristar Hair Show Student Team Competition at the Anaheim Convention Center on April 8th. One team placed first place overall, as well as first place in the hair and makeup categories, and a second team of students placed third overall, as well as second place in makeup and third place in nails.
Both teams were guided by their instructor, Ms. Brandy Edwards, who actually competed in the hair show six years earlier as a cosmetology student. Because of her experience, Ms. Brandy knew first-hand how to best prepare the students and what a valuable learning tool this competition would be for them.
“When you graduate from cosmetology school, most jobs require you to audition in order to become a stylist. Competing helps the students get used to being watched and critiqued. It gives them the confidence they need for their future job search,” Ms. Brandy said.
Ms. Brandy handpicked two teams of cosmetology students to compete at the hair show who were interested in competing and extremely talented. They collaborated together to determine an overall theme for their look at the competition.
Team 1 – Breakfast at Tiffany’s theme:
Vanessa Hernandez, hair
Brenda Fernandez, nails
Maria Ramirez, makeup
Nicole Kasner, model
Team 2 – Pink Flamingo theme:
Herminia Cuevas, makeup and hair
Maria Ramirez, nails
Jazmine Lopez, model
Leading up to the competition, the students practiced nonstop, drilling between taking clients on the clinic floor and at home on their spare time. They also organized various fundraisers in order to raise money to purchase the supplies they needed for the competition. Not only did they have to stock their kits, but they also had to purchase shoes, clothes, and jewelry to complete their model’s finished look.
The day of the competition, Ms. Brandy and her students drove to Anaheim in the early morning and started practicing in a hotel room. Once the competition began, each team had 90 minutes to style their model’s final look, 30 minutes for each section, before it was turned over to the panel of judges to be critiqued.
The first team’s look was inspired by Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. They styled their model’s updo and makeup just like Audrey’s was styled in the movie. Nicole’s long, spiky nails were painted Tiffany’s blue with one nail designed to look like a Tiffany’s jewelry box.
“One of the judges told me that he loved my updo. He’s a world champion hair stylist, so for him to say that made me feel really good,” Vanessa said, who styled Nicole’s updo.
The second team styled their model’s pink and black hair in a sleek updo to match their Pink Flamingo theme. Jazmine’s eyeshadow colors resembled a pink sunset with her manicure painted to match. Flamingos and sail boats were also hand painted on each one of her nails.
The prestigious panel of judges awarded the first place prize to the ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ look styled by Team 1. They were also awarded first place for Vanessa’s updo and first place for Maria’s makeup. Team 2’s Pink Flamingo look was awarded third place overall, along with second place for Herminia’s makeup, and third place for Maria’s manicure.
“I’m very proud of our students’ achievements. It took true dedication and talent for them to place at the Barristar Hair Show, as well as great guidance from their instructor, Ms. Brandy. These awards go to show that we have the most talented instructors and students in the whole state of California here at Salon Success Academy,” Bob Gross, the school’s owner, said.

Help Us Raise $5,000 For The Relay For Life
Salon Success Academy is once again participating in this year’s Relay for Life in Rancho Cucamonga. We’re trying to raise $5,000 for the “Cut Out Cancer with Salon Success Academy” relay team for the day-long event on June 1. We’ll be selling bracelets, pins, drinks, and snacks in order to raise money, as well as holding various fundraisers at our five campuses. You can also donate money on the team’s website.
Please help us reach our goal of $5,000. All of the money raised goes to the American Cancer Society to fund research to find a cure for cancer and supply treatment for cancer patients. This is the fourth year in a row that Salon Success Academy has organized a relay team. Our students and staff have helped raise over $10,000 for the American Cancer Society since we first began.
