Student Ambassadors Lead the Way to Brighter Careers at Salon Success
April ’10
Salon Success Academies has always been committed to giving students a well-rounded education that not only prepares them for a career in the beauty industry, but prepares them to become role models and leaders in their communities. In November of 2009, Salon Success Academies began a Student Ambassador program that helps provide students with this well-rounded education.
The Student Ambassador Responsible Leadership program is designed to help current students become leaders in their school and in the community, helping them build the skills that will serve them as they begin their new careers. Students from all five Salon Success Academies campuses apply to become Student Ambassadors and are chosen based on specific criteria and interviews. The Ambassadors change on a regular basis, as older students graduate and new students begin classes.
“Our focus is always offering the highest quality cosmetology education possible to every student. We feel that students who learn to lead as well as give of themselves often get more from their total school experience and ultimate career development. Our Student Ambassador program offers many that opportunity,” explained Susan Turner, Vice President of Salon Success Academies, and the person in charge of the Ambassador program.
There are currently 27 Student Ambassadors who are participating in the program. These students are working to become a positive influence on their fellow students, volunteers in their community, successful in their careers, and role-model future citizens. The current Student Ambassadors have been hard at work. Here’s a look at what they have done so far:
New Student Orientations
Our Student Ambassadors are always a big part of new student orientation. They are there to help us answer questions about the school, greet new students, and help make sure that this monthly event runs smoothly.
Community Volunteerism Training
During this special class in conjunction with Hands-On Inland Empire, students had the opportunity to learn about volunteering opportunities in their community. This was also a great chance for the students to meet the team that would help them put together the All About Family event.
All About Family Holiday Events
The Ambassadors worked with Hands-On Inland Empire, a division of the United Way, to put together this two-part charity event for families from local shelters. The students organized the event, held fundraisers to purchase holiday gifts for the families, shopped for all the gifts and supplies, and were there the day of the event to greet the families and make sure everyone enjoyed themselves.
International Salon and Spa Expo
Students had the chance to attend the International Salon and Spa Expo in Long Beach, California on January 31 and February 1. This event gave students a look at the beauty industry, meet with industry professionals, and practice their networking skills. After the event the Ambassadors gave presentations to their classmates and the school administration, sharing what they had learned.
Day of Education with Matrix, Inc.
Matrix, Inc., a professional hair product company, provided students with a day of education. They learned effective techniques for corrective hair coloring. This is an important skill for those cosmetologists who may need to help a client who attempted at home coloring!
In addition to all of these events, the Student Ambassadors have a full calendar of upcoming charity work, professional education, and events that they will be participating in.
