What’s a Men’s Undercut and Is It For You?

The Men’s Undercut has popped in and out of style since the turn of the 20th century. Most recently reappearing during the 2014 award season, this men’s hairstyle features short hair on the sides and longer hair on the top. Everyone from Bruno Mars to Brad Pitt has adopted the sexy style– which can emphasize their smoldering eyes—at one time or another. Can you rock this hot look for a cool summer?

Know Your Hair Type

When trying any new style, it is important to know your own hair type. Thick hair works best for this style, but you can build up thin hair with product or a blast from a blow dryer. Reality check: if your hair is receding or if you have a particularly large forehead, this hairstyle may not be for you. Instead, try one of these styles.

Visit Your Barber

So you’ve decided the style might work well with your natural features. Now it’s time to talk to your barber. Bring pictures of the style on your phone or from a magazine to help the barber get a clear idea of what you’re looking for. Make sure to ask for trimmer sides and more length on top, in case they don’t know the style by its name. Tip: Avoid cutting cowlicks too short because it will accentuate them.

Length is Key

You can always cut more hair off but you can’t add it back, so start conservative. Ask your barber to trim the sides in intervals, allowing you to take a peek as you progress. That way you can decide what length looks best on your face shape.

Style

Once you’ve got the cut, you’ll need to maintain the style. Wash your hair as you normally would. Towel dry and apply product to the top of your hair as it has the most length. Play around with a brush and hair dryer, brushing it straight back or opting for a side swept look. Decide what looks best for your personal style, day, or mood.

Maintain

Keep an eye on your hair growth. Chances are you will be able to tell when it’s time to visit the barber next. If you’re not sure, the style typically needs to be refreshed after about 2-3 weeks depending on how short you like the sides.
