How to Protect Hair in the Winter Season

skincare tips for you

Do you want to escape the rough beauty and hair conditions that come with colder weather? Follow these tips to protect your hair in the winter season.

Take Shorter Showers to Protect Your Hair

Hot water feels good on a brisk day, but it can lead to dry skin. Not only that; hot water isn’t great for your hair either. It may result in brittle hair that’s more likely to break down. This is especially the case during the cold winter months. As an alternative, use lukewarm water in the shower. A lukewarm shower will help your hair stay strong, shiny, and healthy. Consider timing your showers and staying in there no longer than 10 minutes. And if your skin is red after that shower, your water was too hot!

Wash Your Hair Less Frequently in the Winter

Most cosmetologists discourage daily hair washing because it depletes your hair’s natural oils. This becomes more important in the winter. Try to avoid washing your hair every day in the winter. Instead, wash your hair every other day. Also, opt for a dry shampoo to keep your hair fresh and clean even without the frequent washes.

Use a Conditioning Mask to Protect Your Hair in the Winter

Try a conditioning mask in your hair at least once a week. A mask contains added nutrients for an intense surge of moisture. Masks are ideal for people with brittle or severely dried out hair. Look for a conditioner that contains shea butter, jojoba, coconut milk, or oil to help hydrate your hair. Leave your conditioner in for 3-5 minutes so that your hair can soak in all those important nutrients.

Use a Hair Oil Treatment for Your Hair

Hair oil treatments are extremely important to prevent dry hair in the winter. Oil treatments restore and lock in moisture in your hair. You can use oil treatments as a preventative measure or for damaged hair.

Our hair experts recommend oil treatments with argan oil that you leave in your hair. These treatments are simple yet effective during the winter months.

Wear a Winter Hat when Outside to Protect Your Hair

Be sure to wear a hat to protect your hair from the winter weather. Snow, wind, and dry air rob moisture from your hair. A hat provides you with an extra layer of protection. That said, not all hats are the same. Wool and cotton hats aren’t the best for your hair, so consider softer fabrics like satin.

Do Not Leave Your House with Wet Hair in the Winter

Here’s another winter hair tip: never go outside in the cold weather with wet hair. Wet hair tends to be more susceptible to damage than dry hair. In the winter, this means wet hair can freeze and break.

Use a hair blow dryer to quickly dry your hair before you head outside in the winter.

Bonus: Moisturize Your Skin in the Winter!

The reason your skin hates the cold is that cool dry air holds less moisture than warm air. The water in your skin evaporates more quickly which can leave your skin irritated, flaky and even red. Minimize dry skin with a thicker cream-based moisturizer before you see the first symptoms of dry skin. Check your local pharmacy for eczema creams or creams geared toward itchy skin. You may also want to change up your soap in cooler temps so that it has maximum moisturizing power. For more ways to keep your skin luminous click here.
