You probably know that the cold, dry heat of winter can cause dry skin. But your hair is just as prone to damage from the winter weather. Minimize that damage to your hair with special care. The following tips will help you keep your hair looking healthy no matter what the weather is.
Wash Your Hair Less
Your shampoo washes away dirt, but also the natural nutrients and oils you need for beautiful hair. If you can, cut down on how frequently you wash your hair. Try every other day, or even once a week. Instead of a full-out wash, rinse your hair with cool or warm water or try a dry shampoo to absorb some of the oils.
Keep Shower Temps Down
Even though a hot shower feels good on a cold day, those high temps aren’t good for your skin or your hair. Turn down the heat and shower in warm water or even cool water instead. Your skin and hair will thank you!
Moisturize with Oil
There are tons of hair oils on the market to target different types of hair. But if you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to make it to your local beauty store you can always use olive oil. Warm it slightly and massage into your scalp and hair. Leave the oil on for two hours and then shampoo. There is no need to follow with a conditioner because the oil serves as an awesome one.
Speaking of store-bought conditioner. Apply it to the ends of your hair and not fully into your scalp. The new hair on your head comes built-in with its own conditioners. But older growth hair needs a little help. Conditioners help replenish the natural oils and nutrients of your hair, keep it looking shiny, and helping to prevent breakage.
Let Your Hair Air Dry
Air drying your hair is the healthiest way to dry. Hair dryers and styling tools dry out and damage hair. If you don’t have time to dry your hair naturally before running out the door, use a leave-in conditioner or heat protection product before you style or blow dry.
Choose Your Haircut Wisely
Style your hair so that once you are done, you don’t need to do anything else with it throughout the day. Even simple actions like running your fingers through your hair or over combing it can cause the hair shaft to break. Make sure to get regular haircuts so that your hair is free of dead ends and at its healthiest.
Invest in a Humidifier
A humidifier is good for your skin and also your hair. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, so your mane can absorb and shine, shine, shine.
