How to Create a French Manicure That Will Rival Top Salons

If you don’t have the time to get a professional manicure, there are tips and tricks to do it all in the comfort and convenience of your home. Here’s how to create a DIY French manicure that will rival the top salons:

Prepare Your Nails

Make sure you start your DIY French Mani by washing your hands with warm, soapy water. Next, remove your current nail polish. Even if you aren’t wearing any polish, it’s important to give yourself a fresh base to work with so go ahead and use some nail polish remover to eliminate any trace of a previous polish. For the best results use an acetone nail polish because it is strong enough to take off even stubborn polish. Then, cut your nails to your desired length using nail clippers and file them—in one direction—to smooth out rough edges and perfect the desired shape of your nails. Finally, buff your nails before applying polish.

Apply Your Polish

Unlike a traditional manicure, you do not need to apply a base coat. Instead, take a Band-Aid and peel off the wrapper. Using the outer edge of the Band-Aid’s curve, apply it to your nail so that you have just a little bit of your nail showing. Once you have the Band-Aid in place, use a white nail polish and paint in the tip of your nail. The natural curve of the Band-Aid makes a perfect French Mani tip. Apply two coats of the white polish or as many as it takes for the color to become opaque. Remove the Band-Aid carefully while the polish is still a little wet. Allow to dry and apply two coats of clear polish. Even after your nails are dry, be gentle with your nails for one to two hours after applying polish. You don’t want to ruin all your hard work.

Once your nails have dried completely, restore the moisture to your nails that you stripped with the acetone remover. Proper cuticle care is crucial to get that perfect, professionally done nail look. Rub cuticle oil all over your nail beds to ensure they look their best. Next, give your nails, hands, and arms some love with a body butter or moisturizer.
