Once you have your esthetician license you’ll have to decide what you want to do and where you want to work. You’ve got options! Work in salons, spas, and resorts, giving facials, waxes and other skin treatments. Or try to break into the movie, theater, and fashion industries as a makeup artist. If you think you’d be interested in medical esthetics, you’ll need more training, but that’s a career where you could really make a positive impact on the lives of others. Check out these three paths you might take as a licensed esthetician:
Salons and Spas
As an esthetician you would be essential in any salon or spa. Resorts are wonderful places to work because they provide a relaxed setting that your clients will love—and so will you! Services in a resort spa may include advanced facials or skin treatments, body wraps and aromatherapy. Because you’re trained to recognize skin and pore problems, you’ll be able to offer advice on how to improve your clients’ skin and make them look and feel wonderful. Start off working for someone else to get lots of experience, and maybe someday you could open up your very own shop.
Use your license to work for a makeup company like Sephora to teach clients what the best shades of makeup are for an individual’s skin tone or how to contour for your face shape. In addition to teaching application methods, as a makeup artist you would also recommend and sell products to help customers create a look on their own. Makeup artists are also vital on movie and theater sets. And who do you think makes those models dazzle on the runway? A makeup artist with the right talent and training!
As a medical esthetician, you’d work under the supervision of a medical doctor, such as a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist. Your job would be to use your skills to help patients with more serious skin issues and injuries. Scars, pigment disorders, sun damage, acne, and wrinkles can all be treated through medical procedures administered by doctors and estheticians. Some of the treatments you might provide include laser hair removal, vein therapy, skin tightening, chemical peels and microdermabrasion.
