How to Avoid the 5 Most Common State Board Mistakes

Once you’ve completed your beauty school education, you need to pass the State Board exam. In California, you need to pass the exam to work in your dream career as a cosmetologist, esthetician, or barber. Salon Success Academy can help you get there! Here’s how to avoid the 5 most common mistakes:

1.       Sanitize

Sterilize your tools, work station, and hands thoroughly. Be sure that there is enough disinfectant so that the tools can be fully immersed. Use an EPA-approved disinfectant and allow enough time for your tools to air dry in their own designated area.

2.       Properly Care for Your Materials

Some tools cannot be disinfected or reused. For example, buffers, sponges, wax sticks, and gloves should be disposed after a single use. Towels should be cleaned in water that’s at least 140 degrees for 15 minutes. And be sure to store your clean towels in closed cabinets.

3.       Correctly Label and Store Cosmetics

Store liquids, creams, waxes, powders, and gels in clean, closed, and clearly labeled containers. Use products with care to avoid cross contamination. For example, double dipping a stick applicator in the wax pot is a big no-no.

4.       Follow the Required Steps

Most hair and skincare techniques require specific steps. On the exam, be sure to follow the proper procedures, taking steps in their exact order. Memorize the procedures and practice beforehand so that the processes are natural for you.

5.       Use Time Management

The written portion of the exam has 100 questions that you must complete in 90 minutes. Time yourself during the practice rounds to judge how much time you need to answer the questions. This preparation will reduce your stress on the exam and help you find success.
