Of course you don’t want to look older than you actually are. Prevent premature aging by saving your skin from the sun. Here are 5 skincare tips to beat those summertime rays:
- Sunscreen Always
A recent study by the American Academy of Dermatology revealed that only 30 percent of women regularly apply sunscreen to their faces and other exposed skin.1 Regardless of whether or not the sun is shining, you should always wear sunblock. Even those morning and afternoon walks to work or around the neighborhood add up over time. You may just be running out and think you’re covered, but you’re not. That short errand could cost your skin dearly over time. Sunscreen can help prevent dark spots, wrinkles, and even skin cancer!
- Track Rays
You can take a look outside and gauge if the sun is at its peak but to be extra sure, track your local UV forecast with apps like SunZapp. If the UV index is above 6, make sure to lather the sunscreen on and cover up. The sun is the strongest from 10-4 so during this span you need to re-apply and be mindful of your exposure.
- Dress the Part
Sunscreen isn’t the only protection against overexposure. Look for clothing that is labeled as an UPF (ultraviolet protective factor) protector with an SPF of 50 or higher to block ultraviolet radiation. You don’t need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe to prevent sun exposure, though. You can also keep your skin safe by wearing dark colors that are woven tightly. And a wide brim hat and ever-chic oversized sunglasses are sun defending staples!
- Layer with Cosmetics
Makeup not only makes you feel beautiful, but it can keep you beautiful too! Apply a sunscreen base. Then, apply a BB (beauty balm) cream or foundation with SPF. Once you’re two layers deep brush on an SPF bronzer or seal your look with a setting powder.
- Measure Sun Exposure
Instead of gauging by your skin color/burn whether you’ve had too much sun, there are now products that have small, water resistant, and stretchable sensors that adhere right to your skin much like a temporary tattoo. The “tattoo” sticks for roughly a week and lets you track exposure on an App.
