4 Ways New Stylists Can Market To Clients

Once you graduate from beauty school and obtain your license comes the next big step – building your clientele. Talk to any newly licensed cosmetologist and they’ll tell you it’s one of the biggest challenges of starting a career in the beauty industry. The good news is there are many inexpensive resources out there you can use to help reach out to potential new clients and keep your existing clients.

The key to growing your clientele will always be giving exceptional customer service. News of your skills and talent will travel naturally when your existing clients tell their friends and family about you. But if you truly want to grow your clientele base, you need to go above and beyond just word of mouth marketing.

Here are 4 ways new stylists can market to new clients:

  • Referrals – Take word of mouth marketing one step further by offering discounts for referrals. Give a discount to your existing client for referring someone and also give a discount to the new client.
  • Email – When a new client comes into the salon, make sure to get their email address. This is a great, nonintrusive way of keeping in contact with clients. Send them an email with the monthly specials or a coupon to celebrate their birthday.
  • Social Media  – Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter – these free social media sites are the perfect place to display photos and videos of your best work.  Not only that, but there’s also a huge audience on these sites. Try offering exclusive discounts to your fans and followers.
  • Rebooking – It should be no surprise that rebooking your clients is the easiest way to increase your client retention. When the service is done, simply ask the client when they would like to come in again, or suggest when they‘ll be due for a touch-up. Your reception desk plays a key role in rebooking, so make sure they’re doing their part.

Marketing is one of the hardest parts of being a new stylist. Try not to get discouraged and give up! Some of these tips outlined above might work wonders for you, while others might not work at all with your client base. The key is to constantly be trying new ways to market yourself and stick with what works.
