Halloween makeup can be the best part of your costume. In fact, if the makeup is good, you won’t even need a costume! Makeup also gives you a great opportunity to show off your creativity and your imagination—you can dream up new creatures and characters or put your own spin on pop culture icons.

Demogorgon

Turn Halloween upside down with the mysterious creature from Stranger Things. Paint the open-mouthed demogorgon on your face, or pick up some yarn, wire and liquid latex for spectacular special effects makeup.

Superhero

We’d all like to be superheroes, even if just for a day. And you can look like one for this holiday. Black Panther, Spider-Man and Wonder Woman are popular makeup trends this year, but you can also dream up your own heroic fantasy.

The Lion King

Unleash your inner animal with makeup from this classic movie. Makeup artist Sir John released a makeup line with Luminess Cosmetics earlier this year, so you won’t have to search high and low for the perfect palette. Of course, you can glam it up as Nala or Simba, or you can walk on the wild side as the green-eyed, black-nosed Scar.

Mix together orange and yellow paint for the base of your face, except for around the mouth. Use white paint for the muzzle and black on the tip of your nose and around the nostrils. Use black around the eye sockets and draw a scar that cuts through the left eye. If you don’t have green eyes, you could use contacts for maximum effect.

Princess Jasmine

One of the hottest Halloween looks this year is from another Disney classic, “Aladdin.” Use natural, subdued tones for a look straight out of the live-action film. For the classic cartoon look, start by contouring your nose and cheeks, and applying white highlighter to the insides of your eyes and the area below your brow bone. Next, create a smoky eye and apply a thick layer of wing-tipped eyeliner.

Unicorn

You don’t have to be a kid to indulge in this fantastical trend. The unicorn craze is popular with people of all ages and is a great way to show off your creativity. Use the bold, bright colors of the rainbow, or go extra girly with pastels and glitter. You can pick your favorite color and use that as the color scheme, or choose a black palette for a holiday-appropriate look.

Mermaid

Not interested in rocking a horn in the middle of your forehead? With the same color palette, you can transform into a beautiful (or spooky) mermaid. Or, become inspired by the upcoming movie “The Little Mermaid” and make yourself up to look like Ariel.

Pennywise

Clowns and creepy carnival makeup are in this year, so you can’t go wrong with any frightful design. But why be just any clown when you can go as the most terrifying clown of the year, Pennywise? Start with a layer of white face paint, and then put on a bald cap and paint it white to enlarge your forehead. Pro tip: rub a glue stick over your eyebrows to keep the hair down. Next, draw on the red lips and lines down the cheeks and then draw on the black eyebrows. Add contacts for an extra scary look.

Alien

Forget the all-green “We come in peace” aliens. Use a unique color combination and a little imagination to create an extraterrestrial that no one has ever seen. With blue, green and purple tones, you can become an undersea alien, and with magenta and fuchsia you can become an alien princess. Use silver and metallic tones for a space cadet look, or rock all colors for a psychedelic alien look. But be careful—per the FDA, neon and glow-in-the-dark cosmetics are not safe for use around the eyes.

Skull

If kitsch and pop culture aren’t up your alley, you can’t go wrong with a classic skull makeup, which looks great on both guys and gals. Put a new twist on the skull by designing a half-face, just the jawline, or an inverted look with white eyes. Or, add in colors, flowers and sparkles in honor of the Day of the Dead.

Porcelain Doll

This is another trendy look for 2019, and the great part of this makeup is that you can take it in either direction—cute or scary. You can rock a cute, vintage look with painted lips and freckles or a haunted, creepy look with scars and broken pieces.
